Bass Motives is another of Phil’s compositions written for the melodic bass (see also Second Sight, Out There, Flashpoint, Adagio for Fretless and Latino Caribbeano). Phil wrote Bass Motives specially for Fred Baker who replaced Hugh Hopper on bass in 1988 and it features on the CD Digging In released in 1991 by Cuneiform Records Rune 34. The first two of Phil’s CDs, Cutting Both Ways and Split seconds, comprised some numbers played by his band In Cahoots and some made in collaboration with Dave Stewart with intensive use of MIDI. Digging In was more of a solo effort: conceived, computed and recorded at Phil’s Crescent Studios making extensive use of MIDI with drum parts programmed by Pip Pyle and bass and keyboard parts added by Fred Baker and Pete Lemer.It can also be heard on the CD In Cahoots Live In Japan.
