Phil wrote Red Shift in 1989.
Red Shift is the phenomenon where light from distant objects shifts towards longer, redder wavelengths. The expansion of the universe causes red shift where the fabric of space expanding between galaxies stretches the light waves moving towards the red end of the electromagnetic spectrum. Redshift is the phenomenon where light from distant objects shifts towards longer, redder wave lengths.
Edwin Hubble is credited with discovering the significance of red shift in 1929, showing that distant galaxies are moving away from Earth, with farther galaxies receding faster, proving the universe is expanding. While Vesto Slipher first observed galactic red shifts and Georges Lemaître developed the theory, Hubble combined distance measurements with red shift data to establish Hubble’s Law, a foundational discovery for modern cosmology and the Big Bang theory.
Phil’s composition Red Shift can be heard on the CD In Cahoots Live 86-89 track 6. This was a crossover time for In Cahoots with Steve Franklyn replacing Pete Lemer on keyboards and Fred Baker replacing Hugh Hopper on bass.
Tracks 1, 2 and 5 were recorded by Radio Bremen on May 23rd 1986.
Track 3 Red Shift was recorded by VPRO on October 19th 1989 with Phil Miller on guitar, Steve Franklin on keyboards, Elton Dean on alto sax and saxello, Fred Baker on bass and Pip Pyle on drums.
Tracks 4 and 6 were recorded at the Bass Clef, London on November 15th 1989.
