Phil wrote Nowadays A Silhouette for Alan Gowan in 1974. It was first performed by National Health when Alan rejoined the group in 1979 on their extensive European tour of The Netherlands, Finland, Sweden, Spain, Italy and France and also their USA tour the same year. in 1982 it appeared on the album Before A Word Is Said with Alan Gowan, Phil, Richard Sinclair and Trevor Tomkins. I recently added the video of an In Cahoots 1984 concert at Le Dunois, Paris to this page. I love the close-up footage of Phil which shows his involuntary facial expressions when he plays. He was sometimes teased about this by fellow musicians in his early years but it was not something he could control. Personally I find it very moving. One can see, not just by the contortions of his face but how his whole body is gripped emotionally by every note he plays. Not so much lything and gracing as writhing and grimacing!
