A Life in Music: Your Root 2

Another perennial In Cahoots stage favourite, the piece is here performed as an all-out rocker, much like it must have sounded when Phil, Richard Sinclair and Pip Pyle first began rehearsing it as a power trio in 1982 (it was only recorded six years later on Split Seconds). The main theme is quite fiendish, with some complex unison lines over shifting time signatures (with Pete Lemer’s eight-note synth melody acting as the eye of the storm), and there are a few, let’s say, floating moments here and there… But it’s a great vehicle for solos. Pete takes the first, followed by Doug over Fred’s walking bass, then Fred himself with some really monstrous fuzz bass, and finally Fletch on drums.
