A Life in Music: Underdub

The set lists for both concerts were subtly different, with material that was played at both or just one of them. In the case of Underdub, one of Phil’s best-known compositions (from Hatfield and the North’s classic The Rotters’ Club, released in 1975), it was of course played twice, but with different line-ups. Common to both renditions are the dual flutes of Theo Travis and Marc Hadley, who play the piece’s serpentine theme and both take a solo, Mickey O’Brien’s bass, and the guitars of Fred Baker and Doug Boyle, with Fred taking a solo in the first version and Doug in the second. On piano are Alex Maguire (#1) and Pete Lemer (#2), and on drums are Mark Fletcher (#1) and Paul Dufour (#2).
