Message from Marc Hadley on his new CD: How to Cut Water

Phil, captured by Marc Hadley during a break from rehearsing in Marazion, Cornwall.

For those steeped in the Canterbury Scene the passing of Phil Miller in 2017 left a profound void, yet his musical philosophy and uncompromising approach to composition resonate deeply.
A testament to this enduring legacy is How to Cut Water, a deeply personal album project by collaborator and friend Marc Hadley. The roots of the album are inextricably linked with Phil’s world. Spanning an eight-year creative arc, the album features original compositions, balanced alongside collaborative work with bassist Jack Monck and keyboardist Willem Van Droog. It follows  on from Phil’s involvement in The Relatives and Marc’s 2013 album production “Virtually” including the last recording to feature both him and Richard Sinclair.
Crucially the record features Phil’s finished 5/4 composition which he called  “Thing in 5” but has been re-named “Yours for a Fiver” by Marc. To bring the track to life with added authenticity, Marc recorded it with former In Cahoots members Fred T Baker and Pete Lemer using Phil’s own guitar and valve amp. The result is Phil’s presence, not merely felt as an inspiration but woven directly into the DNA of the music itself. He is actually present on the remastered track “On my mind” and on a bonus track “Fat Cats” taken from Phil’s last studio session.
How to Cut Water stands as a continuation of a legendary lineage. It balances complex arrangements with deep emotional resonance, fully honoring the spirit of uncompromising collaboration that Phil championed throughout his life.
With the album awaiting imminent release, an official launch social is scheduled for June 7th at Pengersick Castle in Cornwall. Obviously not Canterbury, but then the bulk of the production was generated in Falmouth and Penzance! For those who wish to explore how Phil’s final musical thoughts and enduring spirit have been faithfully delivered into 2026, How to Cut Water stands as a beautiful, essential new chapter.

Phil Miller’s: “Thing in 5” (now renamed “Yours for Fiver” by Marc Hadley)  track 2 on Marc Hadley’s recently released CD: How To Cut Water.
