In Cahoots – Arhus (Denmark), Aeskens – 24 May 1986
I can’t remember where this came from, maybe a cassette from Pip’s collection, and sadly this only had what looks like most of the first set. The recording quality is somewhat rough, with saturation in the louder parts, but the dynamics are good and the band sound very energetic here, with Pip particularly standing out. An interesting curiosity here is Pete playing his solo on “His Haec Hoc” on electric piano rather than synthesizer – not, it seems, because the latter had let him down, as it is heard on what little we have of “Eastern Region” at the end. Speaking of Pete, we have another version of his unreleased “Kandoo”, as well as one of Elton’s “Janna”. For completists only probably, but dedicated fans will find much to enjoy here.
Phil Miller – guitar
Elton Dean – alto sax, saxello
Peter Lemer – keyboards
Hugh Hopper – bass
Pip Pyle – drums
