Recorded on the eve of the band studio sessions for “Cutting Both Ways“, these are live-in-the-studio performances of the music Phil had recently written with the aid of a bursary from the Arts Council, specially recorded for the BBC’s Jazz Today programme. To Phil’s dismay however, when broadcast, the programme had the music in the wrong order, which resulted in the two nearly identical performances of the “Green & Purple” theme being heard almost back to back. With slight editing of Charles Fox’s banter we have re-arranged the programme so that the tracks are now heard in the sequence Phil intended. Being recorded so close to the familiar album versions, these performances are not hugely different apart from the solos, but it’s an excellent recording and the band are in strong form following two full days of rehearsal at Phil’s North London home.
