IN CAHOOTS – London, Vortex – 1 April 2004
This gig was a momentous occasion, albeit only in retrospect, being the last In Cahoots performance with Elton Dean (a founding member some 22 years prior) and Jim Dvorak (after 14 years). I had seen the same line-up perform at the same venue a few months before (I remember both Richard Sinclair and Paul Rogers being in the audience – that’s quite a triumvirat of bass players under the same roof !), so I can almost visualise what it must have looked like. The sound is typical of recordings made in small venues (this was about a year before the ‘new’ Vortex opened doors in its current location), not soundboard quality but very listenable. The setlist is interesting, with the return of “Truly Yours” (possibly the only time the whole piece, not just the intro, was played with Fletch on drums) and an otherwise unknown new tune by Elton – I can’t hear if Phil says its title before or after it’s played. In any case, it’s a nice parting gift from our beloved, and much-missed saxellist.
Phil Miller – guitar
Elton Dean – alto sax & saxello
Jim Dvorak – trumpet
Peter Lemer – keyboards
Fred Baker – bass
Mark Fletcher – drums

I *believe* this picture is from the 2002 Progman Cometh festival… unless Mark Fletcher wore the same tee-shirt two years later? It’s possible I guess.
