In Cahoots Vortex ’08

“In Cahoots’ brief European tour of June 2008 served as a belated celebration of the release of 2006’s Conspiracy Theories album, which had been recorded with a revolving cast of wind players (most notably Didier Malherbe) and other assorted guests (including Richard Sinclair, Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin and Doug Boyle) alongside the regular rhythm section of Pete Lemer, Fred Baker and Mark Fletcher.

For live performances, saxophonist Simon Picard was retained from the previous line-up, but instead of trumpet the sixth member this time around was a trombone player, and In Cahoots’ only female member ever – Gail Brand (trombone parts on the album having been performed by Annie Whitehead).

The setlist includes two Miller originals from Conspiracy Theories, the title track and « Flashpoint », alongside a selection of InCa classics encompassing the band’s entire career – all by Phil except for Lemer’s « Big Dick », his tribute to Dick Heckstall-Smith (at least that’s what he claims !). This presents the final date of the series, at London’s Vortex Jazz Bar, following gigs in Belgium and France. This would turn out to be In Cahoot’s penultimate tour, before the pair of dates in November 2009 which preceded the sessions for « Mind Over Matter ».”
