Today the eighteenth of October 2026 is the ninth anniversary of Phil’s death and the saddest of days for me. I miss him all the time. Since we got together in 1977 and moved into Colvestone Crescent in 1980 we lived in perfect harmony until his death at home at 23 minutes past 2pm on the 18th of Cctober 2017. Here is a photo of him, standing on our back door step, looking at the birds in our back garden.
Living in Colvestone Crescent was a milestone for Phil. We soundproofed one of the rooms which Phil used as his studio where he worked at his compositions tirelessly. He initially swapped his tape recorder for an Atari computer, Notator software, a Fostex 4 track tape recorderand a midi guitar. He formed his own band In Cahoots to play his music. He wrote 64 compositions for In Cahoots and brought out 12 albums of his music with them. He toured with In Cahoots all over the UK and Europe and also played concerts in Japan and the USA. He also played with Shortwave, the Phil Miller/ Fred Baker Duo and a reunited Hatfield & The North. In all he wrote 83 compositions including what he wrote for his previous bands: Delivery, Matching Mole, Hatfield & The North and National Health. After his death in 2017 the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire put all his music into their Archive.
Fred Baker runs the Phil Miller Legacy Band with students of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire to play Phil’s compositions and keep his music alive.
Phil never lost interest in birds.
